Abstract

With the rise of AI, the role of human involvement in business operations has been in decline. As one of the most transformative technologies of the modern era, it allowed businesses to scale to very high levels using far fewer human resources. Cursor, one of many seemingly small startups, has managed to turn into a billion dollar company while having far fewer employees than other companies of similar size. Case studies on companies like these examine the role of AI in SaaS businesses and its contribution to revenue per employee growth. Artificial Intelligence is more advanced than ever, and as demonstrated by Cursor, it can provide a significant edge. By observing how AI provides advantages to companies like Cursor, we can understand how to translate certain business needs into functions suitable for AI automation. This paper examines in depth how Cursor utilizes AI in its operations, and its effects on company growth. Through the use of case studies and expert frameworks, research findings indicate that the use of AI in Cursor's internal operations such as support automation, code review bots, and AI supported developer tools has had a significant effect on revenue per employee. The use of AI has significantly contributed to Cursor's growth, enabling the company to reach $100M ARR with just 25 employees. This conclusion illustrates how AI can be a major contributing factor in the growth of lean startups, and provides a reapplicable model for SaaS startups seeking improvements in efficiency.
