Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to investigate how different categories of luxury goods respond to changes in economic conditions. This study builds a three-tiered framework to evaluate how macroeconomic drivers shape consumer behavior for high-end, accessible, and quiet luxuries during economic transitions. This study focuses on secondary research by first conducting a Pearson correlation test to analyze the relationship between macroeconomic indicators and luxury sales, then reviewing academic journals, financial reports, and news articles to use the Chinese market as a case study. The data and correlation test reveal that the GDP growth rate shows weak and statistically insignificant correlations, while inflation volatility is strongly and negatively correlated with luxury demand across almost all categories, and the opposite is observed for CPI. The behavior of different luxury tiers varies with the characteristics of their customer segment. The resilience of high-end and quiet luxury amid contractions lies in the income stability of their targeted customers, which includes high net-worth individuals. More evident growth is observed in quiet luxury despite downturns as preferences shift towards risk-averse investment in quality and resonance with the brand’s cultural value. Moreover, accessible luxuries experience volatility because the middle class’ discretionary spending is highly sensitive to fluctuations in the job market and inflation. Finally, this research concludes that luxury consumption is not directly driven by general economic growth but by conditions that affect real consumer purchasing power.
